Teddypig Hacks An eBook: iTunes For eBooks

June 25, 2007

One thing I realized recently since I started buying eBooks is I had no way of really tracking them besides dumping them into a folder on my hard drive. I have tons of them now and I found myself starting to purchase eBooks that I already had. That’s when I knew something must be done.

I buy PDF files instead of the myriad of other formats available. Why? Because the lowly PDF file has honestly transcended “just being” a format created by Adobe. PDF is now supported across the board by just about every operating system you can name. Most, if not, all of the products I use in my job as a system administrator have PDF manuals that are available online. There are tons of products that let you read them and the format may not be the most cutting edge but it is highly adaptable and always readable. I tend to suspect the usefulness of any gadget or software that cannot support the common and proven to be useful PDF file.

So back to my pile-o-eBooks… What to do? Well I recently took a shot at converting an eBook to a text file to read on my iPod. It sorta worked but I do not recommend it because quite frankly the actual experience of reading an eBook on an iPod sucks major ass. But… iPods use iTunes and I read somewhere that iTunes recognizes PDFs. OH! Hmmmmm…

First download iTunes from Apple, it’s free you know. Now, after it installs open it up and let’s get started.

Say you are on Samhain and you see the new J. L. Langley book My Fair Captain for sale and you just have to have it because it is J. L. Langley and she is so cool. You purchase it and download it and you get a PDF file from Samhain that says myfaircaptain.pdf well that’s great but the file does not tell you who wrote it or any other useful information does it? Usually I tend to rename the file like JLL_myfaircaptain.pdf so I at least have an idea how to identify it and then stick it in my eBooks folder.

But now I have iTunes opened I can drag that file into iTunes. Notice iTunes does not erase the original when you drag it in? It just makes a nice copy for you and stashes it in it’s own application library system. Is that nice or what?

Dragging PDF into iTunes

Once the file is listed and is sitting there in your iTunes you will notice the only information is the name of the file and there are all these columns that mean nothing to an eBook. So select View at the top of the application window and select View Options which brings up a little box and then I make sure only Artist, Date Added, Year and Comment are checked because that is all I think I really need. So click the OK button after making your selections and all those extra columns go away.

Now “right click” on the listing of the PDF file you just dragged into iTunes and select Get Info.

Adding information to the file listed in iTunes

Then select the Info tab in the box that pops up.

Adding information to the file listed in iTunes

Now just fill out Name with the series title *If applicable* and eBook title. Artist with the author’s name. Year it was published and I use the Comment to remind me what publisher the eBook came from.

Adding information to the file listed in iTunes

Once that is all filled out click the OK button and you now have all the information you need about the eBook file you just put into iTunes.
Now try this. double click that My Fair Captain listing…

Viewing a PDF in iTunes

Up pops the Adobe reader and you are reading the eBook. Excellent!
But that’s not all sports fans!

Check this out, another free iTunes trick… Put a blank CD-ROM in your computer drive. Select File at the top of the application window and then select Back Up To Disc…

Backing up your PDF library with iTunes

Your whole PDF library that you just spent the time to list in iTunes is now being backed up to a CD-ROM for ever and ever and ever. AMEN!

iTunes cd-rom backup listing

Look at that! All your eBook PDF files are now organized into individual folders by author and stored on a CD-ROM. That rocks! You rock! That $2000.00 bucks you spent on eBooks is now safe from the dangers of hard drive crashes and viruses and such.

All for freaking free!

Thanks Apple!

Jamie Craig: Master Of Obsidian

June 23, 2007

Master Of Obsidian by Jamie Craig
From: Amber Heat

Jamie Craig Master Of Obsidian

“You gave me the door knob, knowing it was tainted,” Gideon said. Whether he was deliberately ignoring Jesse’s
meaning, he had no idea. He simply wished he could see what Gideon was doing. “You did it deliberately to see what would happen.”

There wasn’t time for a response. The crack of leather split the air.
Jesse trapped the howl in his throat, and his lungs seized, the sudden contact freezing the air in his chest. He was more shocked than hurt, but the shock enveloped him completely. His cock jerked, a single thread of pleasure winding its way down his spine and to his groin.

“I’m sorry,” Jesse gasped, when he could speak. “It won’t happen again.”
Gideon chuckled. “You’re lying. You’ve got balls, I’ll give you that. But if you thought it would get you what you wanted, you’d do it again.” The whip cracked again. Slivers of heat sliced down Jesse’s back. “Admit it.”

It occurred to him to lie again, but he suspected Gideon’s reaction would be the same whether he told the truth or not. “I would if I thought we’d both get what we wanted.”
“And what’s that?”
“You don’t want to have to care about the consequences.”
The whip landed across his shoulders. “You want to be the one in charge.” And lower on his ribs. “You think you should be able to do whatever you want to me, and, God, Gideon, I want that, too.” The whip whistled through the air behind him, erupting like fire across his skin. Jesse cried out, unable to ignore the pain any longer.

So wrapped in the searing agony now making his skin throb, he never heard Gideon move.
“I should be able to do whatever I want to you,” Gideon murmured in Jesse’s ear. His bare chest pressed to Jess’ back, and the cool contact helped ease some of the sting. “But right now, I’ll settle for this.”

The first touch of Gideon’s tongue along his split skin made Jess cry out again, but this time, it was a sound of shocked pleasure.
Jesse writhed against Gideon’s mouth, but never attempted to pull away from him. If anything, he wanted more contact. Gideon abandoned his broken skin and sought out the long thin lines of blood rolling down his back. Each swipe of Gideon’s tongue soothed every sliver of pain, until he was quivering with pleasure and need, the sting from the whip almost entirely forgotten.

“I smell you everywhere.” Gideon’s voice floated up to him, caressing hands gliding around the front of his thighs. “In the office, in my bed. Do you know I can’t bring myself to change my sheets ever since you spent the day in them? You need to bleed more often. I don’t think my cock’s been soft since I fucked you.”

Jesse moaned. He knew Gideon wanted him, but remembering a long night of fucking was not the same as hearing the words come from Gideon’s mouth. Gideon moved his hands over his thighs, his fingers framing Jesse’s stiff cock without actually touching him. He wanted Gideon to make him bleed, wanted Gideon to fuck him, wanted Gideon to touch him, wanted Gideon to bite him…
Rivulets of blood trickled down his back, disappearing one by one. Gideon’s tongue traced over swells of flesh until Jess felt his mouth at the upper curve of his ass. His heart thumped, and he stood a little straighter, spreading his legs on instinct in order to open himself up.

“I already said you weren’t going to be rewarded,” Gideon chastised. He came around Jesse’s body, standing tall and pressing his blood-slick chest to Jess’. “You don’t get my cock, and I’m not touching your ass.” He smirked. “Not even if you beg.”

Jesse leaned forward, stretching his neck to tentatively lick the patch of skin beneath Gideon’s jaw. For a moment, he savored the taste of Gideon’s skin—which led him to thoughts of other areas of Gideon he wanted to taste. “I don’t get your cock at all?”
“No.” His eyes turned golden. “I get yours.”
Blood smeared down Jesse’s body as Gideon slid down. His breath caught in his throat as Gideon grasped his cock at
the root, angling it away from his body. With one last wicked leer, Gideon dropped his jaw and swallowed Jess down in one stroke.

Jesse fought the temptation to close his eyes—he needed to watch Gideon. He tensed, expecting to feel razor sharp fangs against his shaft, but Gideon was surprisingly careful. He pulled back, sliding his warm mouth along Jesse’s shaft, and then swallowed him once more, his teeth barely scraping against his cock. Gideon looked up, his golden eyes sending a shockwave through Jesse’s body.

I was talking with someone the other day about a Gay Vampire Romance series I am reading over at Loose-Id and the fact I could not quite put my finger on it but even after three books into the series it was simply missing something. The person I was talking to was also reading the series and stated “It needed more emotion“.

I stopped, I thought about it and damn she was right, the whole three books came across written at an emotional distance. Sure the sex was there and the usual violence inherent in a vampire romance book, gay or straight. It was all there but the emotion, the thing that draws me into liking a bad boy character like a vampire and wanting to find out more about them and eventually see them get the guy, it was simply missing.

Jamie Craig has none of that problem here in Master of Obsidian. Her Their vampire Gideon is a gentlemen with an admittedly disturbing past but he stays civil and honorable and has a trusting human assistant named Jesse Madding who is his best friend and right hand man. The relationship is very professional and courteous… that is until a drug called Obsidian starts showing up that by simply touching it drives vampires to unleash their hidden inner desires.

Gideon is suddenly dominating Jesse in the most forcefully HOT, sexy as hell, BDSM sex scenes I have read in a long while. I mean Shit! this book is Damn hot. Gideon is of course ashamed of himself when he wakes up the next morning after having been pile driving and sucking his assistant into complete submission throughout the night. Jesse on the other hand loved every nasty, bad boy, fuck me harder, minute of it. In fact he wants more, a lot more and he is gonna make damn sure he gets it and Gideon as his Master to boot.

Go now, pick this book up over at Amber Heat or Amber Allure or Amber “whatever the hell they are gonna create next week”. I just do not get the sections they have. Get over it guys, pick one name, promote it, and stick with it… OK? I swear these publishers can act like elementary school kids when it comes to selling Gay Romance sometimes. What is wrong with simply calling the whole frigging website one professional name (Amber Press perhaps?), like your well known competitor Samhain does and quit acting like mixing the genres will give the rest of the books cooties or something. How silly can you get? It just makes finding these great books confusing and the last thing we need is another difficult website to wade through like Torquere Press.

Grade A Jamie Craig! Now you two go write a sequel damn it!

Shayla Kersten: Thirty Days

June 14, 2007

Thirty Days by Shayla Kersten
From: Liquid Silver Books

Shayla Kersten Thirty Days

A warm hand surrounded his cock. Long lazy strokes pulled Biton from sleep. Morning light showed through the curtains. Fast breathing shook the body plastered
against him whether from fear or desire, he didn’t know.
“Cavan?”
“Yes, Master.” A tremor of fear tinged the quiet response.
“You feel good.” He tightened his arm around the slender body. “Really good.” Biton wanted to roll Cavan over and plow his body until waves of pleasure washed through him. But the decision made last night stopped him. “Cavan, why are you stroking me?”
“I should stop?” Confusion colored his voice.
Biton wasn’t sure where to start and the pleasure of Cavan’s strokes fusing his synapses wasn’t helping. Start with the basics. “Do you enjoy being with a man?”
“I… I do with you.” The warm hand faltered.
Biton slid his hand under the cover and wrapped around Cavan’s. “I haven’t always known I was gay.” He held tight, stilling the sensuous motions. “Until I was twenty-two, I tried to convince myself I wanted women, until my first male lover. The revelation was almost more mind blowing than the sex.” Biton shivered at the memory. “It wasn’t sweet and tender, it was hard and rough and I couldn’t get enough. The relationship didn’t last long, but I knew a woman would never satisfy me the way a man did. Before we parted ways, I had discovered my need to control my partner and the desire for that partner to be a man. But both were my choice.”
Sliding his fingers around Cavan’s wrist, he pulled the man’s hand away from his cock. Rolling toward him, Biton caressed the stubble roughened face. “You never had the chance to make that choice. How can you know if what you feel for me is desire or gratitude for giving you a safe place to stay? Or is it a sense of obedience because you’ve never known another way of life?”
“I want you. I want to stay with you.” Panic made Cavan’s voice tight and his eyes wild.
“Why?” Biton whispered. “If you had the chance to leave here, a place to live without obligation to anyone but yourself, would you take it?”
“I…” A half-choked sob swallowed the rest of his words.
“I’m not saying you have to leave. If you stay, it should be because you want this life and not because you have no choice.” Biton ran his thumb across the trembling bottom lip. He leaned and brushed a kiss against the sorrowful line of Cavan’s mouth. “You have to tell me what you want.”
Cavan’s neck strained forward, chasing Biton’s mouth until he caught it. “Please…” he mumbled against Biton’s lips.
Biton melted into a gentle kiss. He ached with need, but his desire had to be tempered. And the feeling of tenderness had to be quelled before it became something deeper. If Cavan didn’t accept the life of a submissive willingly, Biton would lose him. The idea made his breath catch in his throat. As the tempting lips pressed against his
opened mouth, Biton couldn’t stop himself from falling in.
His fingers splayed against Cavan’s face as his body moved closer. The heat of Cavan’s mouth couldn’t compare to the hot cock pressed against Biton through thin layers of cotton. That Cavan desired him wasn’t in question. But why? Because Biton was gentle where others were cruel? Would Biton ever know his real feelings?
Desire pushed away the nagging questions. Sucking the shy tongue teasing his mouth, Biton pulled Cavan closer. The slender body melted against him. Biton’s fingers raked the short red hair. The ache in his groin intensified to scorching heat.
“Want you…” Cavan moaned as he gasped for breath.
The desperate desire to push into the velvet heat of Cavan’s tight ass almost overwhelmed him. “Cavan…” Biton wanted to tell him no, but the desperate hands pulling at him stilled his protests and dissolved his thoughts.
Holding him close, Biton rolled their bodies until Cavan was pinned beneath him.
The frantic pace of their kisses slowed. Biton stroked the short hair as he pulled away
from Cavan’s mouth.
The pale green eyes held such trust, such innocence. How could he, after all he’d been through, trust anyone?
Could Biton give up the part of his being that craved the control of his partner? Would he leave behind the pleasure of pain to keep the trust and innocence lighting Cavan’s eyes?

I have got to give Shayla Kersten mega props for this story. She took on subject matters here I would never have combined in a million years. Frankly because several of them hit extremely close to home and the fact she got a romance story that is close to believable out of it… DAMN! She’s hot!

Biton Savakis is a Dom who has just lost his slave of ten years to cancer only three months ago. A friend invites him to a small party where he meets and grows interested in a young submissive by the name of Craven. There is interest but Craven has been abused by his last Master and from what the people who rescued him can tell he is still healing from that event. Turns out Craven has a far more nasty past than anyone guessed and Biton takes it upon himself to try and help him.

The subject matter as you can tell is in no way light hearted. It does lead to a series of obvious but exceedingly touchy discussions on the differences between abuse and BDSM. The Focus being on the heart of the whole Safe, Sane and Consensual philosophy without the typical short cuts of simply repeating that stupid catch phrase over and over again as if hammering nails. Yeah Shayla you go girl!

Biton spends some time also in trying to teach the finer points of contracts, safe words and negotiation to Craven. Which had me wondering a bit since I have had little use for those things myself, but OK I mean it is the fad right now. Even though I know damn well that none of that actually protects you from any levels of risk involved and they are in my consideration sorta fluff. The best way for me to tell if a potential Master is worth your trust is by observing how he treats you and others, at least in my simplistic opinion. I still have not found any quick ways around that despite all the people swearing by all that other crap that sounds too close to marriage licenses and wedding rings for my comfort. Listen people get hurt all the time, good people too and not just in BDSM, and the best I have found you can do is stay alert and not get sucked into games and rituals as if those will save you from making a bad mistake.

Shayla hit some really good points by having Briton constantly demand Craven participate in their love making or a BDSM scene or what ever they were doing. He forced Craven not to just cave in with mind numbing soulless submission but to honestly participate in every action and react to it in some way giving of himself instead of treating it all as a one way deal. Good stuff there and it went a long way in selling this story to me since it shows the difference between someone being forced to do these things without will or like I call it “Zombie style” and someone wanting to be submissive. Hell, I see people make this mistake all the time based on misconceptions of what BDSM really is. Most people I have read writing these BDSM romance stories overlook these fine distinctions and small indicators of the focus and attention occurring in a good BDSM scene between two willing partners.

So does the whole thing work though? Well, there are issues mostly due to the length of the story here. There’s only about 65 pages in all. So the evolution of this relationship is not really given a chance to show through and the questions I had of Craven’s capability to get beyond all his years of abuse were still in my mind by the end. Shayla has already stated she is writing a sequel.

WOW! I am impressed you took this story on and kept such a tight focus in making it all understandable when I would have run far and fast in the exact opposite direction without a single clue of how to sell this particular brand of hurt and comfort in a BDSM context. This is the kind of stuff that could so easily get someone (like me) into trouble for making the slightest brain dead plot decision but you pulled it off very very well. You had my undivided attention from the first sentence while I watched you walk this tight rope and you never once lost my interest.

Grade A and I will keep watching for more genius from you.

What I Am Reading ~ J. L. Langley: My Fair Captain

June 11, 2007

My Fair Captain by J.L. Langley
From: Samhain

J. L. Langley My Fair Captain

Aiden stared out over the crowd of military uniforms, his fingers itching to draw. The ball was being held in honor of veterans and most men in attendance were Regelence Naval officers. There were also a few Regelence Marines and three or four IN officers, including Nate.

Aiden hadn’t realized Nate was attending in the capacity of an IN officer, but before leaving the castle Cony had informed them Father and Nate had gone to the ball early for The Fallen Warriors ceremony. Since then, Aiden had been dying to see Nate in uniform.

All day Aiden’s mind played over the scene this afternoon and Nate’s flirting with him. He didn’t quite know what to make of it, but he was excited nonetheless.

“Lord Aiden, how are you this evening?”

Aiden turned to find the Duke of Keithman’s second son, Christian Morris, standing next to him, all decked out in his black and silver dress uniform. Aiden bowed. “Lieutenant Commander Lord Christian.”

Christian smiled and gripped Aiden’s hand. “I’m sorry to disturb you.” He wasn’t conventionally handsome, but he was attractive in a rugged way—the IN uniform only enhanced that. He brought to mind an avid outdoorsman, with his tanned skin and reddish-brown hair.

“You didn’t. I was only watching the dancers while I wait for the next dance.”

“Were you stood up?” Christian frowned. “I’d love to dance with you. It’s such a shame you should have to sit out. Whoever your dance partner is, they must not be very smart giving up the chance to dance with such a fine young man.”

“I’ve no partner for this set, but thank you for the offer. I’m catching my breath, waiting for the next one.” Aiden spotted his friends Rupert and Bannon heading toward himself and Christian. Dipping his head in greeting, he realized Lord Christian was doing the same.

After pleasantries were exchanged, Bannon turned to Aiden. “Do you mind if I ask you a question?”

“No, of course not.” He may not have seen Bannon for a few days, but they were friends. Like Aiden and Rupert, Bannon was a fellow artist.

“The gentleman staying at the castle, Lord Deverell? What is his given name?”

Aiden had no right to feel pride, but he did. “Lord Deverell’s name is Nathaniel Hawkins.”

The lieutenant commander smiled. “I met Captain Hawkins during my service with the IN. Surprising to find out he’s an earl. The man is practically a legend. His war record is phenomenal.”

“Oh yes, I’ve been meaning to ask you…” Rupert’s grin should have warned Aiden what was to come. “What happened on Platt Street today? I’ve heard everything from fisticuffs to a marriage proposal.”

Aiden’s eyes widened. They were saying he and Nate were engaged?

Lord Casey, one of Christian’s acquaintances, stepped up beside the lieutenant and answered before Aiden got the chance. “My brother says he saw you and Lord Deverell walking together this afternoon. He said Deverell called Lord Braxton out for trying to kiss you.”

Good Galaxy, the gossip had made the rounds already. Aiden shook his head. “No, that wasn’t it at all. It was a misunderstanding. Braxton was trying to rescue me thinking I’d lost my chaperone. And then Na—Lord Deverell rescued me from Braxton.” At least according to Braxton that was the story. Aiden wasn’t convinced. Braxton had seemed…different today, threatening.

“Speaking of rescues. I heard Lord Deverell rescued a Regelence ship that was under attack and in flames,” Bannon stated.

“My father told me he’s a mustang captain, that he was promoted the first time every time. He was one of the youngest men to make captain in IN history,” Lord Casey said.

Christian nodded. “Yes, he got his commission while he was enlisted, worked his way up the ranks.”

“Amazing considering he’s an earl, surely his family could have easily bought him an officer’s commission.” Rupert touched his chest dramatically.

Aiden was fascinated. He’d already surmised that Nate was an honorable, noble man, but he had no clue that Nate had such a well-known reputation here on Regelence. Nate may not be an earl, but his rank and status as an IN captain made him more than acceptable consort material. Keeping quiet, Aiden soaked it all in. A man like Nate would never leave his career as an IN captain for marriage. It made Aiden’s spirits drop a little—which was ridiculous, Aiden didn’t want a consort—but he could not help but admire the man even more.

Bannon grabbed a drink off a passing tray. “Captain Fitzgerald said it was his ship Captain Hawkins saved.”

Leaning close to Aiden’s ear, Rupert whispered, “He’s so handsome.”

Aiden was about to agree when an opening formed directly in front of him, and through a chasm of people, a vision appeared.

Nate. Aiden’s heart began beating so hard he was certain it could be seen through his waistcoat and evening coat. Like tunnel vision, his entire focus centered on the man walking toward him. Whispers and gasps sounded all around him, but Aiden barely heard.

Nate was covered head to toe in brilliant almost blinding white. The uniform hugged his body as he strode forward. It accentuated his powerful frame, making him seem even bigger somehow. Which was something, because Nate was a very big man. He wore gold cords over his shoulder and under his arm proclaiming him an Admiral’s aide, likely the Admiral in command of Aries Fleet, the fleet in charge of protecting Regelence’s system. That and the colorful ribbon bars on his chest marked him as the highest decorated officer at the ball, out of IN and Regelence officers. He was the most beautiful and masculine thing Aiden had ever seen.

Aiden would have given almost anything to have had his sketchscreen at that moment. He had to capture Nate like this. This was Nate. He was the embodiment of military authority and strength. He took Aiden’s breath away.

When Nate finally stopped in front of him, Aiden just stared. He wanted to touch Nate, yet at the same time he was afraid to. Nate was so…perfect.

Looking up into the chestnut eyes, Aiden caught Nate’s gaze. It was like the entire assembly disappeared and the two of them were alone. They stood there for several seconds, neither of them saying a word—they didn’t have to. It was then that Aiden knew exactly what he wanted. He wanted Nate.

The side of Nate’s mouth turned up, as if he knew, then he offered Aiden his hand.

Aiden got the distinct feeling if he grasped it he was accepting much more than a dance. Which was fine by him. He inhaled deeply and took what he wanted, seizing Nate’s hand.

Arching his right brow, Nate gave Aiden a full-fledged smile. “You promised to waltz with me.”

“I did indeed.”

Aiden’s group of friends began murmuring at once.

Bending over Aiden’s hand, Nate kissed the knuckles. “Forgive me, but after seeing you tonight, I must command all three.”
