Google

Oh, and when you wake up in the morning
With your head on fire
And your eyes too bloody to see
Go on and cry in your coffee
But don’t come bitching to me

Billy Joel ~ Big Shot

I notice some of my friends are mystified how others can read things online that might be blocked or deleted or simply gone for whatever reason.

There are two ways I use to do this so let me share them with you.

The first is The Internet Archive Way Back Machine which is extremely useful and long of tooth but can be slow to grab new or recent site changes or posts taking sometimes months to collect that information. So basically to use the site you can stick the url of the website you want to search for like http://logophilos.net and then check for what pages are available by date.

http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

The second and more useful way I search for missing web pages is to simply use Google Cache. Now Google Cache is not a website but a function you can use. Simply go to the main Google page and type in cache: and then the full address if you have it in the search bar.

Like this…

cache:http://logophilos.net/blather/?p=821#comments

or like this…

cache:http://logophilos.net/blather/?p=833#comments

The beauty of this is now you can actually use these links and post them without ever being blocked or locked out and they do not count for site traffic since you are linking to Google.
