I know that all my smart readers probably already have the best eBook Reader available on the market right now.
An Apple iPhone or iPod Touch.
Why do I think it is the best? Because despite all the hype and talk about eInk and battery life let’s face the cold hard truth. Kindles and Sonys and Cool-ers are one trick, brain dead, wonders that’s why. I can justify the high price of these single use devices if you can show me this much choice and functionality for $99…
First let’s read an eBook shall we?
First up is Stanza let’s you buy eBooks from Fictionwise and read them. They just updated to version 1.9 all you Stanza users out there. It also has a great Mac OSX desktop program that let’s you read Microsoft lit and Mobipocket eBooks on a Mac.
What is not to like? Let’s hope Amazon who now owns Stanza does not kill it.
Yeah I hear you, they suck! Kindle for iPhone I still have to say Amazon integrated themselves into this app very nicely and you can buy all the Kindle eBooks you want without having to own the crappy Kindle.
Let’s do something else though. Something no other eBook Reader can do.
Bento for iPhone The most powerful personal organizer for the iPhone. Smart, intelligently designed and infinitely customizable through templates a must for the iPhone user. If you need to be organized, get this, and they even have a Mac desktop version.
Pandora Radio for iPhone iTunes is great and all that but say you want to listen to something else programed around a particular artist. Best thing, like all radio should be it is free.
Remote for iPhone So you are listening to iTunes in your home and want to change the volume or the song… but you are lazy. No problem let Remote for iTunes do it from your iPhone. This app is especially useful if you have an Apple Airport Express hooked into your home stereo so you can play your iTunes loud and proud.
Shazam for iPhone So you are sitting at the bar getting drunk off your ass and the DJ starts playing a song that so totally rocks you have to have it. You can either stumble over to the DJ and wait forever to ask him who he is playing or you can simply whip out your iPhone and turn on this app and point it at the speaker. It will even tell you the exact mix of the song the DJ is playing and what album it is on so that you can then buy it. That sounds way better to me than trying to yell drunkenly over the music and hope the DJ takes pity on you.
Anyway, see how the $99 iPhone is so much more than just an eBook Reader? It’s an eBook Reader, and a phone, and a best buddy who helps you stay organized and informed.
Now if only Apple made a bigger screen version. That would be the one and only eBook Reader I would ever need to buy.

After a week with ipod touch (phone soon) I am totally addicted and have some cool apps. Am coping with the text size and can even read with my glasses off, which I cannot on my laptop. Will give these apps a crack. Ta!!

It will be a twofer deal for me, I’m afraid. I love my iPhone, but reading on it is an ‘in a pinch’ thing for me to do. Battery life fades too fast and my eyes just don’t like the back light the way they once did (God, how old I make my 39yrold self sound!). Much prefer the battery life and greater comfort of my Sony.
But that said, I’m right with you when it comes to price (although I must point out that the $99 iPhone came with a fairly hefty monthly fee attached…. and the touch is more expensive). If we can get all those millions of iPhone users into reading eBooks via their devices, I’ll be one happy eBook author :)

I don’t blame Apple for the SUCK that is AT&T.
I hate AT&T. They have installed 3G in some of the strangest places in NC and yet ignore the rest of the state.
They absolutely sucked in the SF Bay Area. SF! The one place they should never suck because there is no excuse there are towers every 2 feet.
I wait till the last minute to pay the bill so they have to call me so I can tell them what a poor fucked up service provider they are and how I might deem to pay them if and when I feel like it.
I figure if they are gonna fuck me then I get to make it a nightmare for them. I keep thinking I should just unlock the dang phone and go get a T-Mobile sim card but that would ruin some of the functionality.
Apple has taught me a good lesson. Never ever buy or use anything AT&T. Just NO!

Not travelling much I’ve not had too many problems yet – other than I loose 3g from one end of the car rider lane to the other… which kinda sucks when you’re waiting 30mins for the oh-so-lovely kiddo pickup and you forgot your books/reader/wanna twitter…
But yeah, I so wish they hadn’t gone at&T for their provider :( Although, If I head back to NZ at least I’ll be able to use Vodaphone!
