2008: Welcome to the Lambda Literary Foundation, the country’s leading organization for LGBT literature. Our mission is to celebrate LGBT literature and provide resources for writers, readers, booksellers, publishers, and librarians – the whole literary community.
The awards guidelines from 2008 state: In determining whether a book should be nominated, consider that the Lambda Literary Awards are based principally on the quality of the writing and the LGBT content of the work. The sexual orientation of the author is secondary.
Now: The Lambda Literary Foundation is dedicated to raising the status of openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people throughout society by rewarding and promoting excellence among LGBT writers who use their work to explore LGBT lives.
The awards guidelines now state: As such, it should be noted that the Lambda Literary Awards are based principally on the LGBT content, the gender orientation/identity of the author, and the literary merit of the work.
PS… Current comment of the week winner is on Lee Thomas (a Lambda Award winner) who posted about this mess.

Teddy, there’s an interesting array of comments on this issue over at Queerty — http://www.queerty.com/new-rule-straights-not-allowed-to-compete-for-lambda-literary-awards-20090928/. And yeah, most are from bona fide gays!

Yeah, it’s amazing the difference in tone from the typical wank crew (yelling and ranting about straight privilege whiners and betrayers of the gay cause and how M/M is full of sick people) and then there is the actual GBLT people who are pretty much laughing at the idiots who decided to change Lambda Literary Foundation’s mission statement.
You can tell by the terminology used where the adult discussion stops and the wank kiddie speak begins.

Thank you for this, Teddypig. I’ve been bombarded by a lot of the kiddyspeak as uninformed and “anti-prejudice” people are directed hot-foot and hot-mouthed from various “meta fandom” posts. This sums the change up nicely and helps a lot.

The fact so many people are involved in spreading hate, inaccuracies, and lies about the facts of this discussion and who I am or who various well known and well loved Gay Writers are and what I or other Gay people’s position on this issue means is really disturbing and makes me think there actually is a group of people involved who are out to paint anyone labeled M/M Romance online as “straight woman” without any facts just some vague “I saw somewhere these “straight woman” were complaining so everyone is a blah blah blah”.
I really feel annoyed when some “know nothing” who is probably still figuring out their own sexuality tries to explain to me of all people what homophobia or discrimination is especially since I am a gay man who is maybe only 46 years old but I still grew up in a world very different than the one they live in today. I just want to say to those people… GET OFF MY LAWN!
