I was reading Mrs. Giggles this morning who pointed out a new update on the Piers Anthony’s Internet Publishing website regarding Fictionwise one of the top eBook retailers.
Tags: FictionwiseOctober 2009 update: troublesome report that the one-time $15 set-up fee now is invoked any time a change or update needs to be made. They have been paying late, and sometimes in error to the author’s disfavor, not corrected; this is harder to track because they have removed real-time figures. They have censored books, removing ”controversial” ones. This sort of thing bothers publishers, but few dare to protest.

Am I reading this correctly? In order for me to order books from Fictionwise, that I pay for, I would have to pay a one time fee of $15 to do so?

I think that fee is for authors to get the different book formats and for making changes to said books, not for readers.

That fee is for publishers, not for readers. I buy from them all the time and never had to pay a set-up fee. I also belong to some ebook lists, and if they were making readers pay set-up fees, I would have heard about it now as e-book readers are very vocal.

This fee is to the Publisher, not to the reader. It’s a “set up” fee imposed for every book uploaded to FW (ARe/OmniLit doesn’t charge it.) So when an author’s book goes up on FW, they have to make that $15 fee up first in sales before they see any royalties. FW is now charging ANOTHER $15 fee if the publisher wants to add or change the listing (in most cases, this is when the pub wants to add a Rec. Read review to the listing, etc.)
