Money Flows Toward The Writer
Period! End of sentence, anything thing else is a Vanity Press.
“Real” Publishers do not charge you for editing.
“Real” Publishers do not charge you for your cover art.
“Real” Publishers do not charge you a printing fee.
“Real” Publishers do not charge you money for your book with the promise that if they “like it” they might make you an actual author.
The minute you have to hand a publisher money for your book to be published for any reason it is a Vanity Press. I don’t care that Harlequin wants to call their predatory company Self Publishing. BULLSHIT!
True self-publishing means authors undertake the entire cost of publication themselves, and handle all marketing, distribution, storage, etc. All rights remain with the author, the completed books are the writer’s property, and the writer gets all the proceeds of sales.
What Harlequin is selling is not Self Publishing. It is selling it’s name and feeding off people’s vanity and all you are doing is paying them to select things from a menu. Such talent!
UPDATE! For those asking where Harlequin is stepping over the line into “sleazy come-on of a used car salesman” territory…
