Usually reviewing a Star Trek movie is a object lesson in trepidation for me. The dust that has gathered on this franchise is deep and crusty. Questions arise like… Can I keep my Trekkie card if I admit I found the whole Next Generation crew’s movies a bit on the soapy and overly pretentious side? Let’s face it people! Anything that relied on that asshole Data to keep the story line going was FUCKING BORING. Sorry, it’s me I know. So going out and buying this movie (sight unseen and having read no reviews on purpose) on Blu-ray was a gamble… but you know what? The old “Every Odd Number Trek Movie” curse failed in this case.
I liked where they went with the old familiar crew. I liked the reintroduction of action and humor. I liked the reintroduction of sex and short skirts and green skinned women and sex. I liked the whole “broken time line/alternate universe” ditch the old rules let’s have more fun here and let’s stick every extra bright halogen light we can find on the shiny new bridge. For the first time in years I FELT JOY AGAIN! Despite wincing at the occasional rejected comedy scene from an Austin Powers sequel. Um remember the Tribbles? Yeah, that was the old Star Trek too you know.
So my quick much cliched summary of Star Trek 2009 “A Breath Of Fresh Air”
If you are a fanatic Trekkie that likes “big concept Sci-Fi” and considers anything that challenges that ordained role of Star Trek with it’s deep deep meanings then I say DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. If on the other hand you like your Star Trek the old fashioned over the top “William Shatner” way with a knowing wink and a nod to it’s “Wagon Train To The Stars” roots and the occasional Sacrificial Red Shirt Soaked In Romulan Ale then this is the one for you Pats.

My favorite line from TNG: It is green.
Does that give you a hint?

Any coincidence, you think, to the fact that if you add two eyes to Star Trek: The New Generation, you get “SITTING”–as in sitting on one’s laurels?

This movie is just good clean fun. Translation: could be dirtier; still excellent good time for the old school William Shatner lovin’ trekkie–you are correct sir.

I thought the new ST movie was awesome. I even liked this new Kirk, in that I didn’t want to knee him in the crotch nearly as much as I always wanted to do to the Shatner one. And McCoy? Loved loved LOVED him. I’d watch it a dozen times in a row just for New McCoy alone!
Spock/Uhura “romance” (i.e. unexplained making out for no good reason) felt gratuitous though. Wish they’d just left it out.
