The Golden Girls: How One TV Show Turned A Generation Of American Boys Into Homosexuals

Today, as this crowd ages we have to wonder what comes next for the Golden Girl generation of American homosexuals. They’re turning 40 and 50 now. Their hair is thinning, their waistlines expanding, their cachet in the cultural scene is long past. Most have settled into heavily mortgaged condos or bungalows in gentrified neighborhoods, bitter at their mid-level jobs with zero hope of becoming a CEO to make their fathers proud. Many are too old at this point to be pursuing anonymous street pickups and have settled into caustic relationships that are only monogamous out of mutual laziness. Maybe they find weekend solace in amateur photography or an overly primped shit-zu.

In a dozen years, the next logical step for these people is Florida. Will we see whole sections of this state devoted to horny gay retirees sporting the worst 1980s fashions? High pants and feathered hair and modern architecture? Will they follow in the lusty steps of their forebears, the Golden Girls?

Brilliant research and sound arguments I must say! I have often wondered how my love of The Golden Girls was so deeply connected to my homosexuality and love of sensible shoes. So in other words “my gay” is all Bea Arthur’s fault somehow. I think I might actually buy that theory because Bea kicked major ass. But… I still hate Florida in a “California for cheap crazies who can’t afford LA” type way.

Thank you for being a friend.

And here I thought my fondness for TGG had something to do with the fact Betty White was still kinda cute and sexy for an old gal. Like one of those very experienced & clean prostitutes your Dad takes you to visit your first time as a teen. Guess I missed something there. Good thing we have astute watchdogs on the side of culture. Or maybe this writer just needs to remove the King James out of his ass? Hate and stupidity, the perfect marriage, eh?.

This is so out there it’s hard to tell if this is a joke or serious.

I just find it amusing because I do like The Golden Girls.

Hey, I like The Golden Girls too! Does that mean my husband has been right all along and I’m actually a gay man in a woman’s body???

    My vote is for joke.

I loathed The Golden Girls; this kind of show is a major reason I stopped watching TV. Life is too short to voluntarily subject one’s nerves to perpetually angry, caustic people.

I loved the Golden Girls. The character of Sophia reminded me a lot of one of my great-aunts who had already passed by the time the show aired. But it was nice to be reminded.
