After doing my Five Faves for Jessewave I decided to ask some of the best writers out there in Gay Romance land to pick five. I asked these authors what five books got them started writing OR were their absolute favorite reads when they started out and then I asked them what their favorite book was that THEY had written and WHY. So here is my best buddy who I wrote to shortly after reading The Tin Star and started chatting with because she is such a cool person and who I think shortly after that sent me this first chapter of what later turned out to be My Fair Captain and asked me what I thought. Uh wild, well written and ultimately wonderful but that’s something I have learned to take for granted about J.L. Langley…

J.L. Langley ~ The Englor Affair

J.L. Langley ~ The Englor Affair
From: Samhain

The Englor Affair do I have to say why? LOL! ummm, because I really like those two main characters.

Ally Blue ~ Forgotten Song

1. Ally Blue ~ Forgotten Song This was the first gay romance I’d ever read. I was asked by our mutual publisher to give a quote for the book. I remember at the time I had put aside my very first MS because I had a gay character and he took over. I couldn’t concentrate on the main characters because he wouldn’t leave me be, so I continued to work on the Moon series (as Jeigh Lynn). I wanted so badly to tell his story but thought no one would want to read it. Then I was asked to give a quote for a brand new author. I read Forgotten Song and not only did I fall for Ally’s wonderful voice and style I realized that yes people would want to read gay romance. After that Ally and I became friends and a year or so later critique partners and to this day she remains one of my favorite authors (and favorite people).

Willa Okati ~ A Year And A Day

2. Willa Okati ~ A Year And A Day After Ally got me hooked I went on a search for all the gay romance I could find and found Willa. I don’t remember what my first Willa book was and I had a hard time picking a fave because so many of Willa’s novels are among my favorites, but I had to add Willa to the list because she was so important to my writing and in particular writing The Tin Star. Without the nudge from Willa It would have taken me longer to get in the game. I remember when Willa was added to my Loose Id editors stable of authors and I was absolutely star struck. Well Livy, my editor, told Willa I had a serious case of admiration and Willa and I ended up becoming friends and eventually CP’s.

Laura Baumbach ~ A Bit Of Rough

3. Laura Baumbach ~ A Bit Of Rough Again, when I started reading gay romance there wasn’t much around. When I found Laura I knew I’d found an addition to my autobuy list. I’ve always loved the rougher sex in books and finding this one was WOW! Not only was the sex hot and the story wonderful but it was well written.

John Jakes ~ North And South

4. John Jakes ~ North And South The North and South trilogy… This was the very first series of books I’d ever read. Somehow I’d managed to get through school with only Cliff’s Notes…not sure if I should admit that. o_O Anyway, I can remember reading the last book in the series, or maybe it was a reread of one of the others, while I was 8 months pregnant sitting in the computer room while Andre played Final Fantasy on the Playstation. I remember bawling my eyes out and Andre telling me to “put it down for crying out loud.” I didn’t. I kept reading. And yes it got better. There is indeed a HEA. ***Teddypig ~ No eBook Available***

Judith McNaught ~ Whitney, My Love

5. Judith McNaught ~ Whitney, My Love I am a huge historical romance fan so I couldn’t not list at least one. I know several people have a problem with the alpha hero in this story, but you know what? I ADORED him! I felt his actions fit the time period. This isn’t a modern man and you can’t judge him by modern standards. Judith McNaught does her research and really puts you into a story. I really wish this book would release in ebook because I prefer ebooks nowadays and would love to reread it. ***Teddypig ~ No eBook Available***

My Fair Captain and The Englor Affair are new favourites.

Whitney, My Love is my favourite Judith McNaught book and one of my all time favourite books. Although I read the original version, I do prefer the re-release that had a couple of additional scenes. Would love the eBook versions of Judith McNaught’s historicals – can’t stand her contemps!

You know how I feel about The Englor Affair and My Fair Captain. I’m re-reading both of them again over the holidays. When is book 3 going to be available? I have been waiting forever. I loved A Year and a Day when I read it over 18 months ago and A Bit of Rough is a classic. I have Forgotten Song in my current TBR pile – I have heard great things about it.

Drop by the site sometime – don’t be a stranger.

I only read My Fair Captain and The Englor Affair for the first, second and third times in the last week and I feel as though I’ve been waiting forever for book 3!

What? WML has new scenes? Darn, I’m gonna have to break down and by a print book. I haven’t tried her contemps but I love her historicals. Oddly I’m not too into contemporary romance unless it’s gay romance or romantic suspense. Julie Garwood is another who I love her historicals but have never tried her contemps.

    Hi Wave.

Well I’m working on the next wolf (Matt) right now. I’m hoping to have it done by spring then I’m going to the next Sci Regency.

Book 3 after wolves, I promise. Unfortunately, I write slower than I used to. I’m too big of a perfectionist. Not only that I write longer works than I used to. I suspect all future novels will be the size of The Englor Affair or more. Hopefully, that will make up for the delay :)

    WHITNEY MY LOVE!!!

Old school at its best–man–that takes me back. Those Judith McNaught’s and the old Garwood’s turned me into a romance reader. (And Woodiwiss–The Flame and the Flower, The Wolf and the Dove)

    xxxx’s & Happy Christmas, JL

The re-release with the additional scenes was originally released as a hardcover in … sorry can’t remember when but have a feeling it was in the late 90′s. Will need to look at my copy when I get home from work. I am only guessing that any paperback releases since then do contain the additional scenes. I do wish they’d release the eBook version, although I have no intention of getting rid of my hardcover copy.

I’m not a fan of Julie Garwoods contemps but love her historicals, and I was very disappointed with her last historical – Shadow Music? She’s another author that needs to have eBook versions of her earlier work!

definitely can’t forget Kathleen Woodiwiss – The Flame and the Flower, Shanna and The Wolf and the Dove are my favourites.

I also love earlier Johanna Lindsey books – why aren’t there eBook versions of her earlier work!

last post cos I really should be working! I even loved Stephanie Stevens Defiant Angel despite it being an almost copy of Whitney, My Love. Understandably there were no more books from Stephanie Stevens but I would have liked more books in the series as the hero, Clinton Barencourte, Duke of Wentworth and Duke of Chablisienne had 3 or 4 brothers and I am sure Defiant Angel was supposed to be the first in a series.

Aw, JL, honey, thank you!! You know what I’m gonna say here, if you were a guy I’d totally do you *g*

I’m SO with you on TEA, btw. I looooove that book, it’s amazing!

Thanks for the update. I AM very happy that the next wolfie book (Matt’s story) will be out in the Spring – I really am because I love him, but I would really, really, really love you to accelerate the next Sci Regency. Since you sent me that one scene over 6 months ago which scared the pants off me :( I’ve been dying to see the finished product.

Have a wonderful Christmas with your family.
