After doing my Five Faves for Jessewave I decided to ask some of the best writers out there in Gay Romance land to pick five. I asked these authors what five books got them started writing OR were their absolute favorite reads when they started out and then I asked them what their favorite book was that THEY had written and WHY. So here are some of my favorite Gay Romance writers taking time out of there busy schedule this holiday season to provide all us readers with some fun reads and insight into what the writers like to read.

Jet Mykles email came in first because she rocks like that.

Jet Mykles ~ Dark Elves 1: Taken

From:
Loose Id
I’d love for people to read that book and get inspired. I’d love to see more fantasy books with races of people where gender sexuality was not so much of an issue.

Mercedes Lackey ~ Magic's Pawn

1.Mercedes Lackey ~ Last Herald Mage Trilogy. The very first gay hero I remember reading, way back before I was writing. Mercedes Lackey got me to want to write period, not just gay fiction, but she’s the first who showed my young, mostly innocent mind that a gay character could be just as intriguing as any other character. She probably also influenced my thought that a gay romance is a romance and not something different or strange.

Stephanie Vaughn ~ Jumping The Fence

2. Stephanie Vaughn ~ Jumping The Fence I read this story back when it was at Loose Id. One of the first purely M/M that I bought and I loved it. Kevin was one of my “turned” gay heros and I guess that idea was intriguing to me, given how many of those stories I’ve written since.

Morgan Hawke ~ Victorious Star

3. Morgan Hawke ~ Victorious Star Victoria, Ravnos and Seht opened my eyes to the wonders of menage. Such rich, vibrant characters. Makes me squirm just to think about them. This one started me reading Morgan’s books and most of them have influenced my writing immensely. I want to be Morgan when I grow up.

Secrets Volume 3

4. Angela Knight ~ Blood And Kisses I still think Decker is one of the hottest vampires ever. This story in Secrets 3 started me reading Angela Knight and I’ve taken notes since. She has such a natural, seemingly effortless style that’s such a pleasure to read.

PL Nunn ~ Dockalfar

5. P.L. Nunn ~ Fan Fiction These are the stories that really got me going on M/M and made me need to write it. Pam got me into two different anime fandoms that I knew nothing about prior to reading her stuff. She pulled me in and took no prisoners and showed how the right author can make something incredible, even if it’s not their own original characters.

Magic’s Pawn was the book that got me into fantasy. I was fourteen (or so), picked up a book with a horse and a cute guy on the cover and was hooked. I love this trilogy and it makes me bawl every time I read and re-read it.

And it’s out on eBook now Mary.

Very cool Jet. I love PL Nunn’s art, I’ve never read her fiction.

I don’t think I’ve read any of your five, Jet, I’ll have to get busy! I’m like James, I keep visiting over at PL’s site for the art and I’ve always been curious about her fictin but haven’t actually read any of it yet. I’ll have to do that one day, hmmm…

oooo. nice list Jet!!! #5 on the list pulled me in to the world of PL Nunn’s fanfiction first – not sure which came next – I probably read Jet’s book Dark Elves before Stephanie’s book …both are favorites. I love seeing author’s favorites lists! always make me want to add more books to by list…

  7. Jet Mykles wrote,

Thanks all! I thought I was going to have more trouble coming up with a list but once I came up with the first, the others followed pretty quickly.

Ally and James, Pam’s fiction is really good but DO pay attention to the warnings. When she mentions character abuse, she means it. All of it’s very well done but talk about the angst! LOL The Weiss Kruez and Ronin Warriors stuff are what made me a solid fan. She’s the reason I got into WK at all.

And, yes, a lot of Mercedes Lackey books have recently made it to ebook. I was SO excited! Check Fictionwise.

Well, I’ve read The Last Herald-Mage trilogy and a fair amount of P.L. Nunn’s fiction. She’s rough on those poor characters, but between that and the artwork she got me watching Weiss Kreuz. I liked Jet’s Weiss Kreuz story “Night Out,” too. My favorite book of hers, of what I’ve read so far, is “Hell.” I loved those protagonists.

    Thanks, Emilie!
