Laura Baumbach ~ A Bit Of Rough
From: MLR Press
My favorite book I wrote–A BIT OF ROUGH–because it was my first anything–first romance, first gay original fiction novel, first best-seller and got me into the writing thing.
My top favorite titles that got me into writing are unfortunately all fanfiction. ***Teddypig ~ Oh boy, here we go fanfiction time! This is what I started reading online before eBooks so grab your coats.***
Forever Knight ~ My first exposure to M/M romance was reading fanfiction. The very first was based on a vampire show out of Canada called FOREVER KNIGHT. I read my very first gay erotic romance by Molly Schneider aka Stormborn and was shock, amazed and thrilled. I’d finally found something exciting and different. Breaking Day, Byzantium Nights, Dawn in Byzantium, One Night in Byzantium, La Voyeuse, Masquerade, Tidings of Comfort and Joy, Unbreakable Bond, When You Don’t See Me, Beyond Words, Breaking Glass. It was so very well written, weaving plot and romance and keeping the characters true to their natures. It was thrilling. She is awesome. Then I read a ton more and found out that not so much of it out there was as good as this author was. ***Teddypig ~ That is usually the case. I had the same problem with Farscape. People would write great stuff and move on. One of my faves were the Aiobheann ~ Blood Brothers stories***
Pirates Of The Caribbean ~ I moved on to the Pirates Of The Caribbean Sparrington (Sparrow and Norrington) fanfiction and found Webcrowmancer and fell in love. Her stories were awesome. Detailed, passionate, complex and 100% enjoyable. A Fair and Fearless Freeman, A Most Accommodating Commodore, and everything else. I loved everything she wrote. I believe she left fanfiction and went pro before I did.
Sentinel ~ Then again I read a ton more of stories that weren’t so great. So I joined a SENTINEL fanfiction group where I was required to write stories to stay in the group. ***Teddypig ~ Some of Laura’s Favorites*** Sentinel stories by Alyjude (Sideburns). I didn’t write romance there but I learned the basics of writing. Then I turned to writing vampire romance which makes sense since it was my introduction to the genre. From there I got here.
***Teddypig ~ OK so that’s like three fandoms and a ton of free to read stories. But I get to choose two more eBooks for those wanting to read some great Laura Baumbach.***
Laura Baumbach ~ Out There In The Night ***Teddypig ~ THE very first eBook I ever bought that was listed on some Gay Werewolf Books website I ran across long long ago.***
Laura Baumbach ~ Ripples On The Moon ***Teddypig ~ This sequel is coming soon I hope from MLR Press.***

Sparrington fic is one of my rare indulgences. It gets awkward when your name ends up in a sex scene and you’re not involved. Sometimes, though… I break out that old zine and read the one with Jack in drag to rob a fancy party.
And Sentinel! There is so much Sentinel stuff for a show that ran 2 seasons. Then again, there was no sub in that text.

It’s so cool that you acknowledge your fanfic roots, Laura :D I started in it myself, but mine was band slash, and it was a closed, private forum where most of it was written so I can’t really post it.
I know a lot of folks kind of look down on fanfic — I can only imagine what our good friend David E. would say — but it’s a wonderful way to hone your skills in a supportive environment. Well, “supportive” depending on your fandom, I suppose. I’ve heard some tales LOL.
