Prepare for the onslaught! CES is coming up and literally tons of news about tablets and eBook Readers should be unleashed upon us. Get ready for the spin and hype and I am sure several gee whiz articles about those NEW eBook thingys… like we have not heard before. Good stuff to know for your upcoming eBook Reader purchases this year though and what you should be looking out for. The secret word is TABLET. The game is to take a shot every time someone waxes poetic about the wonders of grayscale eInk and the Kindle being all advanced technology wise.

Fingers crossed for an Apple tablet or similar. Would love to have some options to look at when I’m in San Francisco. Having just got myself a MacBook I’d prefer the Apple tablet rumour to turn in to reality – at least the Apple tablet would be a device that would actually become available in New Zealand, unlike the majority of the ereader devices out there.

Right now, my cautious hope is for the Microsoft Franklin-planner type device (I can never remember the rumored name). I’ve just got to assume that it’s more than an organizer, will have easy-on-the-eyes screens, and will run some version of WinMo 7 (thus allowing me to read ebooks again in LIT, epub, pdf, etc.). I keep hoping they’ll make a surprise ship date announcement at CES, but, like Apple, I think they will prefer to NOT share the stage with all the other CES news.
In addition, there are supposedly some products coming out from other sources that will run on WinMo 7, so I’m keeping an ear to the ground for those too.
What can I say, I’m an MsReader/MSLIT fangirl who misses reading ebooks because her 53 year old eyes can no longer read off her little iPAQ PDA screen. Besides, that rumored Apple tablet is just too damn big to cart around in my purse.

Yep should be fun between Microsoft and Apple. The only people I hear bitchin are the Kindle folks because they know what this means.

UGH! I’m so disappointed with that HP slate announcement instead of the MS Courier. I dunno, maybe it will work out for me, but I’m not feelin’ the tech-lust for it. Microsft has underwhelmed me yet again. *sigh*

eInk? That’s cutting edge compared with what I use…
I’ve been annoying my colleagues this week by telling them I’ve brought in my stone age netbook — and getting out my Psion 5mx, which is tinier and has a longer battery life than any of their netbooks. And proceeding to demonstrate that one can indeed type on that tiny keyboard. Oh, that good old-fashioned technology. :-)
I know several people who used one as an eBook reader back in the day, but I’ve never actually tried it for that. Maybe I should.

One of the old psion guys decided to update the dang thing.
At $700 it is not cheap but it does have some good figures…
5 inch screen
Has wi-fi and 3g and phone capabilities
Atom CPU
1GB of RAM
16GB solid-state drive
Runs Windows XP

However, it’s not just the price that would put me off. I like XP Pro on my ThinkPad, but one of the reasons why I’m not in a hurry to throw out the 5mx is that I like the instant-on of EPOC (and of PalmOS 4.1 running on my IIIxe, which is the other wee beastie being used as a pocket word processor).
But if I felt the urge to spend laptop size money on a new shiny, that thing would have to come top of the list.

Well so CES did have some cool things this year. But… I think the big guns are holding off for you know what. I think Apple preempted CES this year.
