From Apple Insider: 16GB iPad components estimated to cost Apple $219
iSuppli says with a total parts cost of $219.35, that’s well below the starting price of $499 for the 16GB iPad with no 3G.
What I think is interesting about all this actual cost data is to compare this to what Amazon is asking for the two different models of Kindle and realize the Kindle only has one function or lets just say App. The iPad on the other hand has about 140,000 Apps, including a Kindle App no less, or 140,000 potential functions from the day you buy it making the price that much more acceptable even if Apple is making a sizable profit from the sale.
This also means Apple has the leeway to lower the price if they want. The thing is Amazon and Sony can’t compete with this no matter how many people they get to believe an eInk screen is better to read with. Their only hope is for someone to get an Android version of the iPad out on the market quickly but be willing to mark it way down and make very little profit for all that research and development they are going to spend.

I’m still waiting for Apple to release the pricing for New Zealand to see how much I really want one.
