IREX Digital Reader

Smart Bitches: IREX Digital Reader Review

I hate that mirror
It makes me feel so worthless
I’m an original sinner
But when I’m with you
I couldn’t care less
I’ve been getting away with it
All my life
Getting away with it
All my life
Electronic ~ Getting Away With It

Yet another over priced, over hyped, eInk Reader fails miserably to impress yet another customer. Color me surprised. Oh wait it’s eInk so they can’t see any color.

Listen folks a “Stylus Only” interface is yet another bass-ackwards technology that has already been tried and is a fully documented failure from way back in the 90s. I do not get these companies that for some reason blow gobs of money cranking out these eInk Readers but forget to review previous PDA interface failures before jumping into their next development cycle.

Here let’s do a random review of the Apple Newton from 1998 … How hard was that to come up with a quick example? Is that Apple Newton shit still around? If Apple could not sell that crap what makes IREX think they can?

Or is it IREX and the rest of these folks really are not spending that much time developing anything but just recycling old technology to scam a few bucks off those who did not tryout all those over priced PDAs the first time around?

Let’s see, I predict the next failure of an eInk Reader to function just like a Palm and run Android and have a crappy synch feature that is really junky and never quite works right and and and… You get where I am coming from? Old PDA technology sucked the first time and it sucks even more repackaged as eInk today.

Makes me wonder if they ever try giving prototypes to a few people from the office and let them use it for a month and come back and report on what they liked and what bugged the hell out of them. Seems like a no brainer.

Like they say on SMTB, how are you supposed to use a stylus is you’re hanging onto the subway pole with one hand and the reader with the other? And of course anyone who actually has only one hand/the use of only one hand is stuffed!

I like a stylus fine, for a PDA (I’m nostalgic for my old Palm now.) but not for an E-Reader. It would be like having to carry around a special tool for turning pages in a print book. Heck, even on my Palm I could use the physical buttons on the casing to scroll down or turn pages in an e-book. So one hand operation without the stylus was easy enough. So this is actually less functional than an old PDA.

I can do everything I once did on a Palm TX on my iPhone and it is ten times better looking and better functioning. I can whip out my Palm TX to prove it too.

I do not miss a damn thing about Palm. It was like they spent all their money developing the first model and then they sorta stopped making anything work better software wise.
