Anyone who has bought an iTunes album with a booklet already knows that Apple iTunes has always had the built in ability to track and organize PDF eBook files. Albums in Apple iTunes that have booklets with them were always PDF format.
You can even copy your own DRMed PDF eBook files into iTunes as long as you associated the PDF to open using Adobe Digital Editions. This feature never allowed you to say copy these files onto the iPhone though.
Today with the latest information about iBooks using the ePub format I checked iTunes and I believe they will soon be updating the iTunes application to do this new trick with ePub files.
So keep an ear out there seems to be a lot of changes quickly coming up here with the iPad available in April and the good news sounds like you will soon be able to use iTunes or iBooks to organize your ePub formatted eBooks.

Is this just for organizing books like like Calibre does already, or will be able to read ePub on an iPod as well? Sorry if I ask dumb questions, but I’m trying to understand this stuff.

Oops sorry I was double checking my wording on this AFTER I posted. So right now I am just talking iBooks or iTunes and the iPad.
Yes iTunes always worked with PDF like Calibre to some extent but it never allowed you to transfer the PDF to the iPhone or iPod Touch. And none of this functionality EVER worked with the ePub format.
So that is either going to change on iTunes or they will bring out the iBook application for the Mac OSX and Windows desktops. I think they will just update iTunes like they are saying on the Apple website.
I don’t think Apple is going to allow Calibre to do it’s thing with iBooks though. So you might end up switching to get that type of functionality on the iPad using the iBooks app.
