From: Gizmodo ~ Android’s Acne Problem: Or Why You Should Stick to the Google Phone
The problem and Android phone running a phone manufacturer’s homebrew software, like HTC’s Sense or Sony’s TimeScape, is well known: You’re going to wait a lot longer to get the freshest version of Android. That wait wasn’t a big deal in the past. But as of Android 2.2, you should think a bit more deeply about which Android path you’re going to walk down.
I wanted to point out this article because it states certain warnings and issues with Android Phones that are coming out and some that are already purchased. Apple is not going to be left out of this discussion on the downfalls of mobile computing and quickly outmoded hardware either.
The coming of Google’s Android 2.2 has customers wanting to upgrade into a slicker more “well thought out” version of the Android OS that are finding the brand of phone they bought and the interface the company added to Android may or may not provide an ability upgrade easily. The closer you are to a vanilla install like the Google Nexus One the easier it is to upgrade to Android 2.2.
With Apple iOS4 upgrade coming soon although hardware and OS may be all made by the same company we find that certain Apple mobile hardware will change and older hardware will not so much. Namely the latest iPad and the iPhone 3GS will get all the updates while other hardware versions will start to be left behind as the new features evolve in the coming versions of Apple iOS.
In regards to all the Apple centric hoopla yesterday… My own opinion is after all the hype if I owned an Apple iPhone 3GS I would so NOT get a new iPhone. I am a big old Apple fan but there just is not that much more about the hardware that makes it a “must have”. But… Since Jason has a iPhone 3G the story changes slightly and I think with this hardware update and the coming of iOS4 it probably is time for a new iPhone unfortunately. Although I would much rather have something NOT using AT&T. It is sad to say but we might end up stuck with another 2 year contract.
