From: Mobile Crunch ~ HTC EVO 4G for Sprint Review
If there is one thing you can say about the iPad ages ago, before ever getting one, before even seeing one, before even buying one, is that if you liked the Apple iPhone you would love the Apple iPad. The OS in this case facilitated what the iPad would actually do.
After all the hype and techy talk around the Internet about the iPad this is basically what happened and most reviews came down to pointing to a few differences. The Apple iPad was in essence nothing more than a BIG Apple iPhone/iPod Touch and your opinion was an extension of the iPhone experience.
It’s true, really really true.
Now taking that same simple reality before anyone even buys or touches or even looks at a new Android Tablet what can we say looking at the latest Android Phones…
Want a hint? Read that review of the HTC EVO 4G.
Horrible battery life
Terrible battery life
Really, really BAD battery life
Which I am sure is why Apple bought that chip maker for their iPhone OS when they made the iPad and is not doing Adobe Flash and most likely never will. Android is open and multitasking I agree with all of that and I even appreciate it’s functionality as a chief competitor to Apple and all that entails.
But… I also say Android has an open season on your battery life until Google does something in the OS to correct the problem.
Listen up, Android 2.2 is already on it’s way out the door and getting put on the new HTC EVO 4G and Incredible and Eris as we speak and any current Android Tablets meant to be out this year are already in the pipeline ready to go so I do not expect things to change Android-wise very much. Give it all another 6 months and things might be very different with the way Google updates this thing.
This latest version of Android OS at least was not built by Google with any stops in place regarding multitasking app resource use and one of the big problems winds up being the power munching hell that is Android Apps.
Hmmmm, Just like Apple mentioned when it talked about it’s problems putting multitasking on the iPhone. Surprise that was not a lie!
So what does this all mean for Android Tablets? Nothing good unless the hardware makers do what HTC does and use some kind of an interface overlay like Sense, but not to facilitate using Android like Sense does, but to shut down battery killing apps etc.
I just wanted to point out how easy it really was to predict the Apple iPad by using the Apple iPhone and I think Android Phones to Android Tablets will not be all that much different. It’s not magic, it’s nothing all that new, it’s just bigger.
