Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
For: PS3 and XBOX360
So Jason and I were visiting the local toy store also known as Best Buy and checking out the latest games and came across this one. I can’t say I had very high hopes since it was put out by the same company that did that red headed, big boobs, barbarian hack and slash game called Heavenly Sword.
Boy was I surprised!
This game is based loosely on a Chinese story called Journey To The West which sorta accounts for the precious overly important title which was not a selling point in my mind. The actual game play is your typical combat/platformer so no sand box running around in the wastelands here just get from point A to point B and then a boss fight and then a short story break and on to the next level for about 14 or so chapters. It’s not overly long either and you can easily find stopping points.
Like with most surprises though I found the story breaks were the best part and pretty addictive. Which means in essence the writing and the characters rocked…
So Trip which is the pretty girl on the cover is this post apocalyptic hacker chick who escapes a slaver ship while also accidentally helping free bad boy musclebound fighter dude Monkey. She then enslaves him while he is unconscious with a conveniently borrowed slavers head band doohickey and they head out to get Trip back to her daddy.
It’s your basic bad boy redemption love story that unfolds with all the crazy colorful robotic monstrosities trying to kill them while Monkey swings his big big stick and rides his big badass bike and plays macho knight in shining armor defending girly girl hacker Trip. I swear you will come to love this fluffy game as much as I do because it has all the required awkward “almost a kiss” moments and the way she starts to hug his big muscled body closely while on his bike.
Oh yeah!
Besides killing the robots as creatively as possible to get to the next level there is a requirement to collect as many of these red orbs as possible to upgrade your shields and weapons and then there is the other task to collect all the mysterious masks for no known reason. I must say that the ending was very good at wrapping up the story and tying up all the loose ends making you feel good about getting all the way through even if you are sad about not being able to stick around and find out what happens next. Good game endings are extremely rare this year for some reason so this game earns a lot of points for providing that.
If you need some quick easy and extremely fluffy scifi post apocalyptic video game popcorn with a tasty romantic buttery topping go for this one with gusto people!
I have to report the only bad problems I had was with the glitched limited camera angels which hide orbs and ledges and climbing areas often and the occasional Monkey jumping to ledges bugs that popped up but will probably be patched soon since this game is really new and all.
BUT the best part is the game does save your position automatically after every big event so no real harm done.
Grade B for being too short for a game that turned out to be so sweet.

Monkey as a post-apocalyptic scifi game? I am almost regretting not doing video games (RSI and games do not mix).

The only side kick that seems to have remained from the original is Pigsy. But yeah, you would love this.
