Android is the new Windows.
Which means once you buy it you are responsible to keep it secure because it’s not like Google really cares if you get ripped off. So certain apps have been found to contain something called DroidDream which will root your device and grab your information if it can.
I would also take a quick look at Lookout which is an Android security app and information provider.
You should not have to jump through hoops like this just to read eBooks but oh well.
