From: Publishers Weekly ~ January E-book Sales Soar, Top Hardcover, Mass Market Paperback

The surge of e-book buying expected to take place in January following a round of holiday e-reader gift-giving did in fact materialize. According to preliminary estimates from the Association of American Publishers, e-book sales from 16 reporting companies jumped 115.8%, to $69.9 million in January.

Good news unless your publisher is still dicking around with bad DRM schemes and global rights. Then this is going to mean hitting a brick wall at 50 miles per hour or more and wondering what the hell happened and where all your readers went.

Maybe it’s because your readers started buying eBooks and decided your eBooks were too expensive or your eBooks were not available in their country because your publisher did not have proper global rights or your publisher simply does not even know how to format eBooks properly and the dreck eBooks they do publish are so badly formatted no one in their right mind will buy them.

What might make for a good publisher who sells nice paperbacks at Borders might not be so hot when it comes to eBooks. It’s like Cleis Press who the hell would publish with them right now they do not even seem to know eBooks exist or that it might be a good idea to get their back catalog in eBook format. This is one more reason to stick with a Top ePub like Samhain and less to try and hit the mainstream publishers who may or may not do very well with all this huge sweeping market change going on.
