From 1982 with Rhett Davies unmistakable hand in the production it’s sorta hard to say why this album still works for me while using a sound that quickly became the default for so many other acts back in the 80s and 90s. Sting based his entire solo career off of this sound and so did Sade and Seal and the list goes on for many pages.
It’s not even that original if you realize this is simply an extension of what Steely Dan was all about in the 70s only updated with electronics instead of session musicians and even Brian Eno who helped make Roxy Music so successful when they first started out even played with this sound long before the boys came along to try their hand at it.
But… Roxy Music owned this sound for at least the length of this one album and it really does make for one of the most seamless romantic Sunday morning albums in my collection.

Do you ever wonder about the function of that helmet spike? A vestigial crest only? Or something more immediately practical?

Wouldn’t that make the bird shit on your head instead of just on your hand?

I figured you would have heard that Cocteau Twins album from last week it’s right along this same style only doing the 4AD hazy lazy atmosphere.
It’s just all Electronica to me this is the more jazzy mellow stuff. Around the same time I was listening to OMD and their Architecture and Morality album which is more experimental.

A CT concert? Now see, I could have warned you they were a studio group. I mean they may have looked good on paper and hell they even fell apart due to drug use like Depeche Mode and Book of Love but that does not mean they knew how to rock any stage performances.
