So Jason and I have been running close to full on the silly 60 gigs we had on the PS3 so today on a lark I went and picked up this little 500 gigs hybrid harddrive. Sort of a cross between the old style harddrive and the new SSD that are still way too expensive for this type of use.
Thank you Jason! For finding my first issue which was after getting the old drive out of the drive bay and replacing with the new one I ran into the PS3 obstinately sitting there wanting an some Update 3.6 or something or it would have none of this and pout in the corner as it usually does. It hates me I know this now.
Whatever that is all about Jason discovered you go here. PlayStation®3 System Software Update
You have to stick the said System Software Update on a Fat 32 formatted USB flash drive for the PS3 to pick it up and then, and only then, did it decide it wanted to suddenly reformat the new hard drive and after doing that I had to just tell it OK now delete all that stuff you just did and do a full system restore of the old system data from yet another USB hard drive I made a full system backup on.
For some reason that full system backup did not include the fancy schmancy System Software Update I had to have put on a separate flash drive to get the PS3 to a point to start this whole restore process to begin with.
God, I need a drink!
Sony makes damn sure none of this make any sense as you can obviously tell. Long gone are the Walkman/MDR-V6 headphones/XBR tv days when they had smart people at Sony overseeing there product development.
The full backup and full restore stuff takes hours to complete alone so having to juggle these other details is perplexing. But… should you decide to do all this yourself at home some day when you too are bored now you my readers know the facts and nothing but the nonsense that Sony calls facts these days.
A USB drive with full system backup of all data.
A System Software Update on a Fat 32 formatted USB flash drive.
A new bigger better 2.5 laptop harddrive.
Then your are ready to do this PS3 harddrive update thingy.
I will let you know when we are backed up and running how well this new drive works.

And you do these things voluntarily. Yeah. I’ll never get it.

Well it keeps me from having to go buy a new PS3 when the old one will do just fine with an upgrade.
The thing is Sony really wants people to do this using some tech service.
