Looks like Nook went ePub making Kindle about the only large eBook seller using it’s own format. iBooks just uses a tweaked form of DRM on a basic ePub file format. But rumor has it that Amazon is bringing ePub in with PDF as readable by their software so who knows how long we have before we find all ePublishing going either Adobe DRM ePub or PDF strictly.
What I would give for everyone to go non-DRM open source PDF without using Adobe for anything but a punchline about how lousy flash runs on Android. Oh and maybe an open ePub format for those folks stuck on a large screen smart phone while traveling.
I know it will never happen though as long as the old Dead Tree eBook hating crowd controls the money honey. I just cannot get into ePub since I like traditional page layouts and page numbers and such things that publishers provide but ePub let’s them get all lazy about. I still do not get why not setup the PDF pages to be clearly and cleanly displayed on an iPad and leave the settings there. Seems the Apple iPad is still the form factor to beat in ePublishing for tablets and anything smaller in screen size probably needs to go in an ePub format.
