Michael Connelly ~ The Black Echo

From: Paid Content ~ The Bestsellers: Michael Connelly And The Art Of E-Book Price Cutting

This is honestly why I have stopped reading publishing industry articles. It seems like every week the major publishers are hogging article space with either doom and gloom or this overly simplistic discovery of old retail sales techniques.

Why are they so fucking clueless about the concept of a “Loss Leader“?

Do they actually believe they invented the “selling of the first book in a series at a low price” which Amazon has been doing for years now? Remember how these very same clowns hate hate HATED Amazon for giving away their precious books at such low prices? Amazon will destroy publishing we must stop those monsters! So here they are… selling old eBooks for 99 cents just like Amazon told them to.

Wait till they figure out how bundling a series for one low price will also spur sales of multiple books even if people have some of the books in the bundle already. Oops! I probably just gave away next weeks industry discovery.

Maybe after that we can all go over The Long Tail. That will blow their little minds.

As you’ve mentioned here, ARe offers a free book a day through the better parts of April and December. Those books are the first in their series. In some cases I’ve bought more in the series, but I’ve gotten those free books for as long as I’ve known about them. I know I saw your entries on it in December 2009, so ARe has been doing this for at least a couple of years now.

Rubbing my hands together in glee I went to buy the ebook.
    Cold shower moment.
It’s apparently only $0.99 for US customers at Amazon. And Kobo has geo restrictions so I can’t buy it no matter what the price.
All in all it’s more like inventing cold water when you have both hot water and indoor plumbing.
