Amazon Tablet

From: Android Authority ~ Amazon Kindle Tablet Hands-on. Details Revealed

The amount of speculation going on right now about how Amazon will be the next big thing in the tablet market is amazing. You would think after the whole HP debacle certain folks would wait before proclaiming victory.

Oh well, it gives us something to talk about today. Now I think Amazon did great with the Kindle and it is my number two choice after the really low low priced Kobo for most eInk reader selections out there. Namely because you can buy so many cheap eBooks for the Kindle. BUT… There is a huge difference between a cheap one off gadget like the Kindle and a tablet.

The rumors have been all over the board on this thing and I heard the Amazon tablet was going to be a 10 inch screen and now after the HP crash and burn it will be 7 inches. I heard it would have a dual core cpu or possibly a quad core cpu and now after the HP crash it will be single core.

Let’s face it HP changed the game for everyone since it had computer hardware sales background and knowledge and experience and they bought WebOS which was a slick mobile OS and that was the killer deal to make a good competitor for Apple and they only sold their tablets after they took a great big sucky loss in the price tag and jumped out the window after it yelling never again. They basically had to give those tablets away and take a massive loss.

So what will we likely see from Amazon after that mess?

Well, you can sort of tell from what some of the cell phone companies have done with Android. I do not first off think it will be running the latest Android for tablets because Amazon wants to create their own walled garden not a cutting edge tablet. It will probably be more like the Nook running some version of Android 2.1 hidden under a ton of hacks so it will not be the latest or greatest anything and it will be locked down within an inch of it’s life and probably extremely slow for any Android OS updates.

People are making a big deal about Amazon having so much digital content for such a tablet and they are right but… What type of video experience do you think you will get from a single core cpu and a bottom barrel priced small LCD screen? Not to mention I don’t think Amazon is going to allow many third party vendors to play in their little walled garden unlike Apple has been willing to do.

So no, I don’t think Netflix will be at the party or Apple iBooks or the Nook app either. In fact if Amazon does not have it in their Android app store I would say you can forget installing it easily.

So basically you will get an under powered cheap tablet for $250 acting much like the current Nook with a very restricted set of apps that Amazon will allow you to buy from their Android app store and lots of eBooks for their Kindle app and lot’s of MP3 from their music store most likely but I don’t know about television shows or movies since they are not really giving their tablet much in the way of any power in that regard.

I could be wrong.

I honestly do not see the Android crowd being very happy with the walled garden locked down Android OS approach they will end up getting from Amazon and the hardware driven people will not be very impressed with the under powered parts that will get slapped into a $250 tablet.

I am thinking we might see just another “meh” at this point.
