Macupdate: GIMP 2.6.11
Jason and I were talking about possible Photoshop replacements and I immediately brought up this FREE software package called GIMP. It’s actually from the Linux realm and frankly has been around forever and this here is the Mac compiled version that runs using X11. In geek talk that means it can be slow to show up on the desktop when you start it up and there is actually two separate programs that need to be running for it to work right.
From what I have heard with some effort you can do EVERYTHING possible in Photoshop with GIMP. Still it seems about as confusing as the first time you look at Photoshop if not slightly more so. But hey, it’s FREE! You cannot argue with FREE about ease of use issues. Seems to me if you spent the time to understand it and make it work for you then the usefulness of knowing how to professionally use a FREE product in this economy might be a very good thing for a hard working graphics artist.
Anyway, I highly recommend using Apple App Store for downloading software like this if you can. They tend to keep things clean and updated if you know what I mean. MacUpdate I usually only use in a pinch for these free things.
