Singer 500a Slant-O-Matic (Rocketeer)
One of the things I promised myself when I was very young that I would try to never live a boring life. Maybe a harrowing one and maybe one filled with lots of detours and even the occasional regret but never a boring one. I swear Jason helps me keep that promise.
So yesterday out of the blue Jason walks in the door with this wtf object.
A Singer 500a Slant-O-Matic, and plops it down on the kitchen table and starts fixing it and then he starts sewing. I did not know he sewed. Did you know Jason sewed? I did not know even what a Singer 500a Slant-O-Matic was till yesterday.
Anyway, this was the last of the Singer big metal machines (The “A” on a Singer model number stands for Anderson, South Carolina) and probably the coolest damn sewing machine I have ever seen in person. Sweet! If they had one of these around when I was growing up I might have learned how to sew just to use something so cool looking.
Jason just proves to me again and again he not only is really creative and smart but he also has great taste and an eye for really cool gadgets. If you ever see one of these space age sewing machines for cheap or being put in the trash grab it. They are dependable, full on metal inside and out, heavy duty equipment and worth getting fixed up pretty and the cool factor alone is off the charts.

I always think about machines like this as industrial sculpture and love how there is an aesthetic in the design of this ordinary household object not just utility. This one really looks ‘atomic age’ with the modernist style of the angles and the dials.

That’s a fine looking sewing machine.
