Well that’s a cool way not to lose people who buy a Kindle while still providing a convenience most other eBook retailers do not.

Unfortunately you still have to pay Amazon for the email download through the Kindle mailbox where if you simply learned to buy the Mobipocket format eBook and download to your computer you would get a better priced deal. Except on Mac OSX where Mobipocket DRM does not work. Now if Fictionwise had provided a Mac OSX Mobipocket DRM reader App along with all this they would have a have huge customer base running to them right now. Don’t just think providing another service guys, go the extra step and think “unique delivery channel” by integrating sales with the ability to read the file and transfer to the Kindle by wire without paying the Amazon fee. Stanza did that even.

Oh and can I just say Fictionwise that website layout template you use is tired. I mean it! That style eMarketplace website was over in 2004. So can you try and update the layout maybe make the covers a little more prominent and reformat/cut down on all those words sprawled across the page like someone sneezed and tried to wipe it off? Oh hey, fix your search functions finally would you while you are at it I heard Google has pre-built APIs that work.

October 2009 update: troublesome report that the one-time $15 set-up fee now is invoked any time a change or update needs to be made. They have been paying late, and sometimes in error to the author’s disfavor, not corrected; this is harder to track because they have removed real-time figures. They have censored books, removing ”controversial” ones. This sort of thing bothers publishers, but few dare to protest.

Dear Barnes & Noble,
Congratulations as the new owner of Fictionwise! Unfortunately I posted this to give you some very bad news. You now own the biggest advertisement for the Amazon Kindle *ever* all by your little lonesome.

Here let me show you how Fictionwise is selling Amazon Kindles.

Fictionwise = $26.95
Amazon = $9.99

Fictionwise = $25.99
Amazon = $9.99

Fictionwise = $28.95
Amazon = $15.92

Sorry Fictionwise but if you can’t compete with Amazon pricing are you not selling readers on buying the Kindle? Look at that last example. Why the hell are you even listing that eBook?

Even when Amazon is not selling a eBook for $9.99 their prices are still better than yours Fictionwise. That is a shame and it is a valid point that Amazon can make in their sales to your current customers on why they should dump you and get a Kindle.

I just think Barnes & Noble should know they need to change this about your company and do so quickly. If you can’t compete then you are not only undermining your own profits.

Once you sell an Amazon Kindle you potentially not only lose that customer for these purchases but also lock out any future purchases.
