The Romance Of Reading

January 2, 2008

ebook_title_page.jpgDear ePublishers,
I don’t mean to pick on any one of you because let’s face it, you all do this, but why is the eBook format at least for the setup parts of the eBook you guys print always so minimal and bland? I remember the golden days of TOR. Read more

Publisher Printing Preferences

December 29, 2007

Dear ePublishers,

We here at The Naughty Bits are all about the preferential treatment and since discussion has come up about certain well known and well loved ePublishers displaying this preference in regards to taking eBooks to print we wish to lend our support for this briiliant idea.

It so rocks in a “fuck your competitor up the ass with a big one” way. If anything I myself can understand just that very compulsion. But.. I must say that there are times when I sit here wondering if I am the only one seeing some hellaciously talented authors not getting the sweet sweet “print it now” lovin that they so richly deserve.

So without further ado let me show you some eBooks that the Pig would be so buying for his keeper shelf if you just got off your fat ass and put them on the fast track to paperback as soon as these writers have handed you the whack crack they do so well.

PayPal Is Your Friend

December 27, 2007

Wells FargoPayPal

Dear ePublishers,

Some of you might be asking yourselves… What does the Pig do all day?
Well, let me tell you the world of the Internet Bank Security Expert is a fun filled trip into the bowels of the Internet. A crazy ride that encompasses everything from Mobile Phones, SSL Certs, Single Sign-ons to PayPal Processing. Oh, PayPal you say. Why yes, PayPal, see I also helped my other half start his own business this year. He does Handmade Silk Screen Printing. He is a press in the old school sense of a press.

Redrum Press to be exact.

So when he asked me how to setup an online processing account for his business I reached into my bag of Internet Banking tricks and put him on A PayPal Merchant Account and QuickBooks Pro which integrate very well and got a Business Accountant to setup his books for him and added a module to QuickBooks Pro that is specifically for the type of sales he does. I also set him up on the Google Apps For Business. He is now way over the amount of sales he projected in his initial Business Plan and he is doing very well and with this setup. Most importantly he has the option of having his customers pay through PayPal with a few doing the old standard snail mail but it is all about the options and PayPal is an immediate thing and a lot of businesses are using it because of this integration and capacity. Nothing helps a small business more than money up front customers.

If having a strictly PayPal Merchant Account still bothers you remember there is another less well known option. A Wells Fargo Internet Merchant Account. Feel free to call them up and ask the questions as far as I know it is simply a choice of Brand Names. It can’t hurt and from my POV eBanking like this let’s you stay focused on the ePublishing business not on the process of maintaining the books. Are you secure? Yes, my logs tell me you are. Would I send my partner to something I thought was insecure or problematic?

Oh, and if you ever need T-Shirts check with my partner Jason and his Redrum Press it’s really convenient to do business with him. He uses PayPal just like Fictionwise, All Romance eBooks (Who needs to update their FAQ), Books On Board and tons of great ePublishers. He did these book cover shirts for a certain author that so rocked. Enjoy!

The Whiskey Creek Press Toodle-Oo & EPIC Too

December 16, 2007

Anyone been reading Piers Anthony’s site recently?

There is a simple concept I have heard repeated numerous times when nameless publishers try to explain why THE WRITER has to pay for publishing or publishing services in order for the publisher in question to be able to do what any other respected publisher does every day of every week of every month of every year without writers paying a damn thing.

Yog’s Law
Money flows toward the writer

This is a simple yet highly useful concept and there are no exceptions, no schemes around the rule period, end of discussion. Any exceptions to this rule (ANY FEES! F. E. E. S.) automatically makes that publisher in question a VANITY PRESS.

Now saying that, you are more than welcome to go to a VANITY PRESS but I for one think you are slacking and not having to work at the same job done by any professional writer who has to sell their TALENT to an actual publisher who in turn doing typical publisher business will be willing to put the time and effort and money into publishing that work. Without the writer paying one red cent because a real publisher does things like that. Capiche?

Do I think an eBook published by a VANITY PRESS is of less quality than say a normal publisher? It does not have to be but for the most part it’s Kmart in the bad part of town. But, as a reader and a reviewer I feel that the parties involved are not there to really do their best work. They are there to work the system so to speak. The writer did not have to sell their work they simply provided the necessary cash to finance the publisher to provide the books. They are buying their way in the door, which requires no TALENT.

So based on Yog’s Law Whiskey Creek Press is a VANITY PRESS. Not a sorta “hybrid” VANITY PRESS anymore than someone can be sorta pregnant. They sell printing to their authors to be sold on Amazon. Will I review or promote an author buying their way into the business through a publisher for pay? Nah, I have other things to do with my time than support yet another internet get rich quick scheme destined to fail. Someone whispered LuLu to me. OK, I have bought from LuLu but I liked the author who had actual published work I followed.

So just go on with your excuses Risky Creek Press and your printer’s FEE and whatever else you are hoodwinking people into paying for, or it sounds from Piers site more like you are NOT paying them for. Any publisher that cared would bend over backwards to never ever cross the line and become a VANITY PRESS.

I will not support this crap anymore than I would even think to join EPIC that promotes it. Someone has to be controversial and draw a line well let me start one here.

I say, Stop The Madness! No Games, No Kissing Your Scamtastic Ass, No Reviews, No Awards, No Mixing VANITY PRESS in with real ePublishers like Samhain or Loose-Id. The game is over and I really am tired of the bankruptcies and the continual harm allowed to be done to writers in the name of mindlessly supporting some undefined hobbyist/get rich quick concept like Electronic Publishing with no standards. No Excuses and No EPIC.

We need a REAL Professional Internet Publishing Organization (More SFWA and less RWA) concerned about the utter lack of publishing standards and the good people being harmed that I would gladly pay dues to in order to support the rights of my professional writer/editor/cover artist friends. Not an Awards Ceremony/VANITY PRESS promotional tool.

Stay away from Vanity Publishing and Whiskey Creek Press and EPIC.

Money flows toward the writer You have been warned.

November 25, 2007

amazon.com

I was wandering around Amazon.com today and noticed something funny.
Suddenly I was seeing Samhain eBooks for sale.

From what I can tell Amazon.com is now selling Samhain, Amber Quill Press, Aspen Mountain Press, New Concepts Publishing and Cobblestone Press eBooks.

But… only in Kindle format.
So you will find those ePublishers who allow other retailers to sell their latest eBooks but not Ellora’s Cave or Loose-Id.

This is gonna put eBook authors and eBook Publishers front and center.

Check it out!
