Torch Song Trilogy: Mirror Dialog Scene

December 29, 2007

People might argue with me on this movie being truly romantic since there is a tragedy planted right smack dab in the middle of this damn thing that will make you cry every friggin time. Hey, the horrible truth here is every gay man has to eventually face the fact that slowly and most assuredly he is gradually turning into Harvey Fierstein in a wig.

All together now… But not Enough!

It is so much better just to show you a fun scene than to talk about it so here you go. This is Imogen Stubbs (as Viola) in the male drag giving Toby Stevens (as Duke Orsino) a back scrub.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut

December 21, 2007

I recently got a Sony PlayStation 3 which is not only a fantastic gaming system for my HDTV but it also incorporates a nifty Blu-Ray DVD player which looks freaking awesome on my HDTV.

Blade Runner Blu-Ray DVD

Created by Ridley Scott in 1982
Harrison Ford is the studly cop Rick Deckard
Sean Young is Rachael (Eldon Tyrell’s Niece)

Blade Runner Rachael

I just got the Blu-Ray edition of Ridley Scott’s 2007 Final Cut of Blade Runner from a friend for Christmas. The words Amazing, Jaw-Droppingly Beautiful, Pristine In Every Detail could all fit how I feel. The picture was no longer this dark murky lump it had once been it’s colors flickered across the screen as if they had just been discovered. It shined, it moved, it rumbled to life in my living room and all the little details of the slightly longer scenes created a feeling the movie itself was pausing long enough for you to see just how gorgeous it really really is and as far as which version is better… Well, you do get all the other released versions of the movie in this box set so you yourself can decide.

Harrison Ford had just completed all the Star Wars films and the first Raiders of The Lost Ark installment and was looking just so fucking damn handsome. Sean Young on the other hand had to my knowledge only done a comedy called Stripes and totally blew me away with her turn in this movie. Blade Runner is so many things to so many people. It’s Sci-fi, it’s Film Noir, it’s a Mystery, it’s even Romance. This is Hollywood myth making at it’s finest. What is not to love here?

Shakes? Me too.

What?

I get ‘em bad. It’s part of the business.

I’m not in the business. — I am the business.

What if I go north. Disappear. Would you come after me? Hunt me?

No. No, I wouldn’t. I owe you one. But somebody would.

Deckard? You know those files on me The incept date, the longevity, those things. You saw them?

They’re classified.

But you’re a policeman.

I didn’t look at them.

You know that Voight-Kampf test of yours? Did you ever take that test yourself? Deckard?

If you have the technology you have got to see this new version or… All those moments will be lost in time. Like tears in the rain. I’ll just grab my two pound box of See’s chocolates and I am going to go watch it with the commentary turned on now.

Twelfth Night

Twelfth Night (1996)
Helena Bonham Carter, Imogen Stubbs, Nicholas Farrell, Toby Stephens

Twelfth Night

Oh Huzzah! *snort* Yeah, the Pig likes Shakespeare. Probably all that time I spent working at the Ren Faire. Anyway, I had no clue this was now available on DVD. Amazing! I was looking for something sorta light and romantic but with a nod to the darker aspects of human sexuality and oh man this has got that all tied up.

This version of Twelfth Night gets set in the Edwardian era and I might add it does not flinch the slightest from suggesting the same sex tensions running throughout the the various pairings.

This is simply a gorgeous production with gorgeous music and great acting and one I remember fondly despite the fact you could only get this on VHS for way way way too long.

Helena Bonham Carter is my barometer for a good period movie. If you have a soul for Romance go now and buy this DVD. It should brighten up your winter night nicely.
